India 5 Traits of Civilization Activity
Picturing What Civilization Looks Like
Objective: Know the five traits of civilization and how they fit together.
Activity: Creating a Civilization Mural
A place must display all five traits that you just read about to be considered a civilization. Those traits include: Specialized Workers, Complex Institutions, Record Keeping, Advanced Technology, and Advanced Cities. While civilization is closely linked to life in cities, it's in those cities that you can observe the other traits at work weaving the fabric of civilization.
Today, to help you remember the five traits of civilization, you will work in small groups to create one part of a Civilization Mural. Once all the components of the mural are displayed together on the back wall, you will have a quick summary and an easy reminder of the five traits of civilization.
Instructions:
Gather together with your group and talk about the trait assigned to you. Discuss how your trait is linked to at least one other trait.
Talk about how you would like to best illustrate your assigned trait. (Group work can sometimes be challenging. This step may demand some compromise. If your group reaches a stalemate over what to illustrate, I will listen to your group and make the final decision.)
Once you have decided what to put into your illustration, pick up an 8 1/2" X 17" piece of paper and use colored pencils to illustrate your assigned trait. (note: fill up the paper. Think large.)
Everyone must work on the illustration. Please put group member names on the front. Please put the trait you illustrated and your block on the back.
