Mesopotamia Daily Life in Babylon Activity
AD-Vantage Babylon
"Welcome to Babylon" Advertising Campaign!
Babylon was a wonderful place to live and a magnificent place to visit. It was big. It was busy. It was an especially popular place during festival time. Using the information in the Daily Life in Babylon lesson's reading, your company’s job (your group’s job) is to create a multi-media advertising campaign that will encourage people to visit “Babylon BCE.” The advertising campaign that you create will consist of a "print ad" AND a "broadcast" ad.
Objective: Your Advertising agency's has been hired by the ancient Babylon Chamber of Commerce to create an ad campaign that makes people want to visit Babylon. Think about all of the things that made Babylon great. The ads you create should represent Babylon in all of its greatness in words and in pictures.
Print Ad: To build the tourist trade, your team of advertising professionals will create a print ad to be published in magazines, on billboards, and on the internet. Your print ad should be bright and colorful and should include a slogan and a logo that symbolizes Babylon.

- Please use an 11" X 17" piece paper for your Print ad.
- Put all team member names and your History Block on the back.
Examples and Inspiration - Print Ads: Before you begin designing your Print Ad, look over the slide show of travel poster samples at right.
As you view the posters ask yourself two things: 1. What emotion did the ad agency want the viewer to feel? and 2. How did they create that feeling with the pictures and symbols they used? Then ask yourself these two questions for your print ad about Babylon: 1. What emotion are you trying to associate with Babylon? and 2. What images will you use to create that emotion? |

Broadcast Ad: To complete your "Babylon BCE" advertising campaign, your team will also write a script for an ad to be broadcast on radio, television, or the internet. Your broadcast ad script should include the following points:
- Write an opening welcome. (Welcome to Babylon!)
- Write a brief description of one scenic site, stop, or adventure. (Here are some ideas: Atop the Ziggurat, Marduk’s Processional Way Parade.)
- Write a brief description of a second scenic site, adventure, or landmark. (Here are some ideas: "The Dangerous Sport of Euphrates River Rafting" or "The Green and Glowing Hanging Gardens: A Living Love Story".)
- Include one discount offer or touring tip, such as: Mention this ad and save on scented oils at Sunny’s Shamash Scents. (You may not use this offer. You must create one of your own.)
- Write a closing good-bye reassuring people that they will enjoy a safe and happy visit in Babylon.
- Be sure to include your team's slogan in your ad.
Example and Inspiration - Broadcast Ad: What was this ad agency trying to get you to feel about California? What kind of "tone" does the ad have? How did they use words and what kind of words did they use in their script to get the viewer to feel excited about California?
After each group has a chance to present their advertising campaigns, all posters will be displayed in the classroom. The ancient Babylonians would have created a clever, colorful campaign. I expect you to do the same. |
