Maya Society Activity
The Write Stuff
This should be fun! For this activity, you will combine your knowledge of Maya society and the roles played by different social classes with your creativity to write a short story. When a writer combines history with creative storytelling, it is called historical fiction. That is what I want to see from you.
Be mindful that when telling stories you are stronger if you "show rather than tell." In other words, rather than writing "B'alam was a commoner," challenge yourself and take some time developing details that describe for your reader what social class B'alam comes from. Consider doing that by describing his job, clothing, or home. Or, create a scene where B'alam interacts with someone from a different social class. How does he react to someone above or below him in the social order, and how is he treated in return? Those kinds of clues will tell your reader much about your characters and will help bring your writing to life.
